Garlic is one of the main garden crops that every summer resident grows on his plot, but few know about exotic and unusual wild varieties. One of these is garlic-flavored onion, which is actively grown in Europe and southern countries, but not widely spread in Russia. It is also called elephant garlic or simply rokambol. This hybrid of onion and garlic will be discussed further.
What is the name of garlic flavored onions?
Garlic-flavored onion is a rather rare phenomenon called rokambol variety, looking at which it is not immediately possible to determine to which culture it belongs. It is something intermediate between leek and garlic.
In appearance of the plant, it can be said that its wide, green leaves are extremely similar to leek onions, but the head dividing into several cloves is taken from garlic. It is worth noting that the taste of roqueball remains at the highest level, it is less pungent than the usual garlic, and there is no pronounced smell. Its application is extensive. Description of the hybrid onion and garlic
And now for the description. Rokambol garlic belongs to the family of liliaceae, and is a large large perennial herb. In Russia, it has been known since the 19th century, but it was most widely spread in Europe and Asian countries, and this vegetable is grown there on an industrial scale.
The greenery of the plant looks like a fleshy stem, from which dense leaves, up to 6 centimeters wide, depart. They are painted in a rich light green color and covered with silver patina. Depending on the growing conditions, the height of the leaves can reach 80-120 centimeters.
In the middle of summer, the rocambol releases a flower stalk, on which small, purple bell-shaped flowers are formed. They gather in spherical inflorescences. It is worth noting that these flowers do not form fruits, therefore they are essentially useless and are recommended to be immediately removed along with the arrow.
The underground part of the plant is a giant bulb, consisting of 4-6 cloves, covered with dense and fibrous scales. In the first year after planting the teeth, one should not wait for a full-fledged harvest, usually single-teeth are formed first. With their subsequent planting in the ground, a garlic head is formed, under the bottom of which the children grow. Their number can vary from 4 to 20 pieces.
The taste of this giant garlic is remotely reminiscent of onions, it is less pungent, but at the same time rich. The flesh is juicy, does not exude a strong odor.

Terms for accurate planting onion garlic can be determined based on the selected variety:
- spring rockball planted in early spring, immediately after the ground warms to 4-6 degrees, usually these figures occur in early to mid-April;
- winter varieties planted in the open ground before winter, 3-4 weeks before frost. Depending on the climatic conditions of the region, this time may come between late September and mid-October;
- it's worth noting that there are universal varieties of rocamball, which can be planted both in early spring and late autumn.

Before planting material needs to be prepared. To begin with, it is sorted by type and size, so that the landings are more uniform, sick and damaged teeth are removed. Planting a useful plant
Before planting the rocball into the open ground, the soil needs to be prepared, for this dense soil is loosened to a depth of 25-30 centimeters, while light soils will be sufficient to loosen to a depth of 10-15 centimeters. At the same time, the soil should be cleaned of weeds, stones and other debris.
Soils with acidity in the range of 6.5-7.5 Ph. Are best suited for such a culture. In that case, if the indicators do not match the soil can be made less acidic with dolomite flour or ash. To increase the fertility of the soil for each square meter contribute 30 kilograms of humus or rotted manure.

Rules of care when growing a large variety
Rockambal has been adapted for growing in the harsh Russian climate for a very long time, therefore, in order to obtain a rich harvest, it will be sufficient for the gardener to carry out all the agrotechnical works on the construction of culture in time.
Onion-garlic needs regular watering, during the period of active growth of the plant, this procedure is repeated 1 every 3-4 days, using up to 12 liters of water per square meter of planting. After the head is formed, the rocket ball is watered as the soil dries.
As well as many other plants, rokambol needs timely feeding. Usually this procedure is carried out 3 times per season:
- before the emergence of sprouts, it is necessary to apply nitrogen fertilizers, these include urea, ammonium nitrate, etc .;
- during active growth of garlic onions, 1 square meter of plantings is watered with 3 liters of a solution prepared from 200 grams of bird droppings, 20 grams of urea and 10 liters of water;
- phosphorus-potassium fertilizers are applied during the formation of the heads.
During the cultivation of the rocking ball you should not forget about the mulch, with the help of which you can restrain the growth of weeds and preserve the necessary soil moisture for a longer time.
Collecting and storing a giant harvest
Onion-garlic is harvested after the lower leaves of the plant turn yellow. The fruits are carefully dug and cleaned from the ground, after which preparation for storage begins:
- For 30 days, garlic is dried on the street under a canopy or in a well-ventilated area. The resulting heads are afraid of open sunlight, they may shrink from it and lose their unusual taste;
- After the heads dry, it is necessary to cut the foliage, leaving only a small tail;
- Until spring, fruits are stored in a dry room with a temperature not higher than 9 degrees.
Rokambol is an unusual garden culture, a mixture of both onion and garlic. The resulting fruits have a pleasant taste. To grow such a plant is quite simple, it is not demanding on the climate and other weather conditions.
